Clavier-Übung Teil III – «Orgelmesse»

Clavier-Übung Teil III – «Orgelmesse»

Bach published part three of his monumental “Clavier-Übung” in 1739 in honour of the 200th anniversary of the introduction of the Reformation in Leipzig (1539). The J. S. Bach Foundation is opening 2017 – a celebration of Martin Luther and 500 years of the Reformation – with a unique recording of this rarely performed work. The double CD highlights the relationship between the traditional chorale and its interpretation on the organ and presents the smaller manualiter preludes as a separate cycle combined with hymn verses. This edition is supplemented with Bach chorale settings and was recorded in Switzerland in the Protestant Church of Stein and in the Catholic Church of Gams. It harks back to a memorable concert performance of the work by the award-winning organist Johannes Lang (Kreiskantor at the Friedenskirche in Potsdam-Sanssouci) and the Vocal Quartet of the J.S. Bach Foundation (Lia Andres, soprano; Antonia Frey, alto; Raphael Höhn, tenor; Philippe A. Rayot, Bass) during the 2016 Appenzell “Bachtage” concert series in Gais, Switzerland.
