Johann Sebastian Bach “St John Passion” BWV 245
Trying to establish a ranking in the triumvirate of the Mass in B minor, the St Matthew Passion and the St John Passion is not only idle, but would probably be misleading. For Bach had extremely precise ideas about the message he wanted to convey with each of his compositions: different things throughout! In contrast to the Matthew Passion, which focuses on the humanity of Jesus, Bach wants to bring us closer to the figure of the contending Son of God, who finds his consummation in humiliation and death, with the St John Passion. The study of the score and sources indicates that the Thomaskantor had very extensive theological knowledge. Bach is a hermeneut. We consider ourselves fortunate that our musical director Rudolf Lutz is able to unfold his now vast wealth of experience on this wonderful work by Bach. We have also been able to assemble an absolutely top line-up of soloists, and the choir and orchestra of our foundation are looking forward to the task.
